The Great Hoop Debate

Basketball is an enjoyable pastime for athletes of all abilities. It burns calories, improves cardiovascular stamina, and enhances hand-eye coordination. It provides a social outlet through friendly play and allows people to be part of a team. Adding basketball hoops to your gym space is a sure draw for many athletes. They will appreciate having another workout option within the space.

When it comes to choosing your hoops, you have a few options: Would you prefer mounted wall hoops? Or would it be better to have portable basketball hoops? Here are a few things to consider.

Portable Basketball Hoops

Advantages

  • Simplicity: Portable basketball hoops are the simplest addition to your space. They require assembly, but once put together, they are ready to go. No wall mounting is necessary, and they can be moved wherever you need them.
  • Flexibility: The base is weighed down with dense cement blocks to help stabilize it. They typically have wheels built into the base so you can easily move them around. With the purchase of multiple portable hoops, you can rearrange your gym space as needed to accommodate simultaneous games in different areas.
  • Adjustable: Portable hoops can be adjusted to many heights, giving them more options than a mounted hoop. Typical portable hoops can be set at heights from six feet to ten feet, depending on the size of the players.
  • Versatile: Portable hoops can be moved and stored when not in use. This gives your gym space versatility for many types of activities. It does not commit your gym solely to basketball.

Disadvantages

  • Storage: It is an advantage to be able to store unused portable hoops. However, finding the space to put them is another issue. They are large and bulky and require a dedicated storage space. Locating adequate storage is something to consider if you plan to move them out occasionally.
  • Assembly: While residential portable hoops come in many parts, commercial portable hoops are delivered mostly assembled. The heavy-duty welded steel bases come ready to go. You need only add the ballast and assemble the backboard and braces. When considering a portable hoop, assembly may be a consideration but not a deal breaker.
  • Space: Due to their large, sturdy bases, portable basketball hoops take up a significant amount of floor space. This may be a prohibitive factor in smaller gyms. Before purchasing a portable system, be sure your gym space is large enough to accommodate the bases and allow enough space for game play, as well as other activities you host in your space.

Mounted Basketball Hoops

Advantages

  • Stability: Wall-mounted basketball hoops provide excellent stability. Secure attachments to a wall make them the safest option for adult, competitive play. They allow players to dunk and pull on the rim without the fear of it tipping over. Adding a breakaway rim option to your hoop gives another level of safety for players who may get a little showy.
  • Accommodates Space: Wall-mounted hoops do not require storage. They stay in place and do not take up floor space with a pole or a base. Other equipment can be placed underneath the hoop when basketball is not in session.
  • Cost-effective: Mounted hoops have fewer parts, making them a less expensive choice. They are easily bolted to a wall and quick to install. They are highly durable and will not require many repairs or replacements.
  • Versatile: With the purchase of an optional height adjuster, wall-mounted hoops can be adjusted to eight or ten feet. They work well for both competitive and recreational play. They are versatile in rooms that may have an odd shape and can be installed in various places.
  • Aesthetically Pleasing: Mounting hoops to a wall creates a more professional-looking space. It gives your basketball gym a more authentic vibe for the more dedicated player.

Disadvantages

  • Limited Installation: Safely mounting a basketball hoop requires a sturdy wall. The hoops can be heavy, especially when being dunked on. A mounted hoop does not work with all types of walls. It is important to check the wall structure when deciding which hoop is suitable for your gym.
  • Durability: Proper wall stability and installation reduce the chances of problems down the road.
  • Permanence: Once installed, wall-mounted hoops are more permanent. Consideration for other activities may be needed when deciding upon this option, though some wall-mounted hoops can tilt up or rotate out of the way for other sports, such as volleyball.

Whether you choose a portable basketball hoop or one that mounts to the wall, bringing basketball to your gym is the right choice. Your athletes will undoubtedly feel a new level of energy as they play. No matter your space or budget, there is a hoop system that will work for you.
